A Pistol for Dumas
We rapidly approached the Dwarven Pirate ship (all Dwarven ships are pirate ships) coming in with the wind behind us. The ships maneuvered around each other trying to fight for position, exchanging cannon fire. We were not doing much damage to each other. Finally the wind changed and favored us. We swung around so the port side where I was stationed was able to pour a full broad side into the pirate ship. The ship maneuvered and swung around again to fire a full broadside from the starboard side. We had closed enough that we were able to grapple the pirate ship. Since the port side was aiming away from the pirates one member from each gun crew on the port side was order to join the boarding parties. We charged across the boarding planks on to the ship.
I then jumped down on to the deck and proceeded to attack the nearest pirate. We were so packed in that at first using the cutlass and long ax was difficult. I had my main-gauche and used it to some effect with short stabbing thrusts. After some space cleared out I was able to start using the cutlass and main-gauche. Hacking and parrying into the fight. Pallaeon, a fellow gun captain and I begin fighting together. During the fight, I heard a loud bang and something streaked by my face making me duck. I then heard several more loud bangs. I looked and a dwarf had a HANDCANNON! I shouted at Pallaeon, “I must have the hangcannon”. I charged into the fray and wrested my way up to the dwarf with the handcannon. I bested him in the fight and he fell and dropped the handcannon. I immediately fell to the deck and grasped for the handcannon as a phos dammed dwarf kicked it across the deck. I scrabbled across the deck after it, Pallaeon shouted at me “are you crazy”. “Mostly” I shouted back. I grabbed the handcannon just before it went over the side. I was able to stand up by the rail. I had made it. I looked at Pallaeon and said, “Let’s get you one”. The fight went on and by the end we were able to get Pallaeon a handcannon. After the fight was over and we had captured the ship along with a good supply of gunpowder and her cannon. I was standing on the deck talking about the handcannon with others. A officer came up and listened to us. He said that it was called a pistol and he could show us how to shoot it. I looked down at it and said, “a pistol.”
