Teaser Lead-In Story

This story sets the stage for the “Springing the Trap” scene and occurs on the quarterdeck of the Elle Marie between Captain Falcone and his senior helmsman, Mister Stedmen.

Ship_in_the_Distance__2_.jpg”Ship to the south of us!” shouted the gnoll while pointing to the port side. It was hard for Captain Falcone not to think of the tall lanky hound headed beast as anything but a beast. But in truth that beastman was the Baron of the Kings Valley and the Royal Huntsman. Best not call him a landlubber. But the Sylvan Elf in the crow’s nest on the other hand. Captain Falcone nodded toward the crow’s nest and snorted, “Landlubber.” Mister Stedmen only nodded. “Captain, they be looking for somethin’ a mite more dangerous.” “He likely as not saw it but didn’t say anything.” The Captain didn’t like that thought but he knew the helmsman’s words rang true. “I’m just nerves Mister Stedmen.” “Not use to having the Blue Boys on their griffons circling above my ship.” Stedmen responded, “I be thinkin’ we’ll be happy to have’em before this day be over sir.” “And griffons circling too, Stedman, what have we got ourselves into?” I am going to check on those Orlenian Marines. Steady as she goes Mister Stedmen,” and with that the captain headed down to speak to Sergeant Stetson.

The helmsmen had sailed these waters for most of his life. Being a human that wasn’t that long to hear the elves tell it but it seemed like a long to him. He understood Captain Falcone’s nervousness. The Lady Elle was sailing into trouble for sure. Stedmen had taken the assignment not because he wanted to be a hero, he just couldn’t see any of the young men he had been training to sail these waters standing their ground against a dragon. Stedmen wasn’t certain he would be able to do it either, but he thought he had a better chance than those youngins. Something like that takes experience. I have it. They don’t. Besides, I won’t let the ole lady go out to face danger without me. Wouldn’t be right.

Stedmen could see the sailors hard at work in the rigging. The Sylvan Elf nobleman was in the crow’s nest showing more grace than any man he had met. It was some rough seas to be up there and he had stayed up there without complaint since just after we set sail this morning. Baron Marrathon was near the prow of the ole lady keeping a vigilant watch. The good baron was an intense one even for a runner gnoll. The battle nun that had accompanied them wasn’t what I expected at all. Apart from the trappings of her order, she looked like one of the battle-hardened female warriors you see from time to time. She had plan but friendly face, but she was no barmaid. She moved with the grace that belied the danger one would face if they challenged her. Then there was the Dwarf. He was a sight to see. He is the first Asgardian I have ever laid eyes on. Him in his archaic bronze field plate and there was no doubt about his being a wizard either. He had been casting spells all morning before we set sail. he was a braver man then me to be in that much armor over open water. He was every bit of 350 lbs. in full kit. If he went overboard he was going to hit bottom faster than an anchor. He didn’t even hook a rope to him though he did take position near the main mast.

And then there are the four griffon riders flying above us. Three Azure Knight and a retired Azure Knight. Sir Alariste is a legend. He fought in both Elven Civil wars. He served both King Peter and King Leslie. I am glad he is with us. Then there is Baron Sonya Ironhand. He is one of the more recognizable of the Azure Guard. Half Dwarf / Half Orc is hard to miss. Then there is Sampson Bale, a human Azure Knight and a friendly sort. Looks like a lot of the horse soldiers I have met in my time. And lastly, Baroness Elindale. She looks the part of an elven warrior maiden. All archery and grace. They all volunteered for this duty. I’ll do my part. How can I do less when they so willing do so much.

Guilles Casimir -- Friends and Enemies
Game 92 -- From the Journal of Guilles Casimir

Preamble…

It’s no real secret that I’m not much of an Azure Guardsman, I mean I’m a fair hand in a fight, but I’m no Jazira or even Taura for that matter. I’m not a skilled diplomat, spy, or tracker. I’m a fair healer, and I can and do contribute to our efforts but usually it’s in more subtle ways. Also, unlike everyone else I’m not here out of a sense of loyalty, duty, or family obligation to King and Country. I’m here because I screwed up and this was the only real option left to me. Please don’t misunderstand, I took an oath to the King, the United Kingdom, and the Guard, and I will uphold those vows and do the very best that I can to fulfill the goals set before us. I’ve always believed that Phos has guided me to where I was needed, but for the life of me I still am not sure what my purpose here is. I just don’t feel like I completely fit in.

Because of this I also find it difficult to find any real companions among the guard. If I’m honest, I believe that most think of me as nothing more than the company clown, and that doesn’t really bother or surprise me given how I’ve chosen to live my life. But it is another barrier that I have not yet figured out how to get over. This is not to say that I don’t like the other guardsmen, or I feel left out or anything. Some of the other guardsmen are friends but I wouldn’t say that I have made any close friends. Please note that is not a criticism of the other guardsmen and has more to do with my own failings to be sure. Despite this I do think that I am at least on friendly terms with several of the other guardsmen.

I have found that most of my closest friends are non-guardsmen. Gwaedhon and I seem to get along very well and we work well together. Our specific training seems to work well together. I just wish that some of the things that he chooses to do wasn’t so disagreeable. I fear that he delves a little to deeply into the necromantic arts. Taura is also a good friend, even if she is a bit disapproving of my lifestyle. She is an excellent companion in a fight and has been very loyal since that day that we found her nearly dead on the road where her supply train was attacked.

And yet… it was with my two closest friends that I felt the most… well, not betrayed but let down maybe.

April 14, 1407

After the fight at the docks we were able to get Terquail stabilized if not completely healed, that would have required a minor miracle given the wounds that he had sustained, but we did manage to save his arm and his life.

This Morning Lady Mune arrived. She was there to help discuss our plans to cross the desert. While I was a little taken aback to see her here unannounced, I must admit that I found her presence exhilarating. Lady Mune is beautiful, intelligent, cunning, and extremely dangerous, and in some ways, I’m drawn to her like a moth to the flame. Dancing with death as it were… but oh what a Glorious death it could be. But I digress… Lady Mune is a shining example of my appalling lack of common sense and self-preservation that I have had over the years where women are concerned, and if I don’t learn to control it, it will likely get me killed…. or worse. But life would be boring indeed if I could not enjoy the company and companionship of the fairer sex.

Lady Mune and I spent most of the afternoon together and I even showed her the silks I had purchased and gave her the choice of colors to pick from. She seemed especially pleased with herself and expressed her pleasure quite nicely. Sadly she had to leave afterward in order to get her people moving and in place for our arrival.

Later in the evening Jazira took several of us to a meeting she had set up with a local noblewoman named Princess Dejah. Gwaeden, Taura, and I accompanied her to the meeting and Artemis was tasked with watching the entrance way where we entered the building.

The Princess Dejah was stunningly beautiful I must say. Luckily, I had been with Lady Mune most of the day or her beauty and… other qualifications might have proven very distracting to me. Jazira spoke with her for a few moments there in the alleyway and it quickly became evident that they were more than merely friends, it sounded like they were family, but I am unsure of that.

We were quickly invited in where an older Elf was waiting for us sitting at a table eyeing a chess board. We were all introduced to our hosts and in turn our hosts were also introduced. The Princess Dejah al’Rashid and Akmed al’Jafar, the High Vizier of the Sultanate of Sadina. It was at this point that I realized that our presence was merely decorative as there would have been nothing we could have done to save ourselves at that point. So, I decided that I would try to at least attempt to keep the discussion calm. I found the nearest seat, pulled out my Bandura and began to play conscious that I needed to NOT activate any of the instruments more specific uses.

I won’t try to give an exact accounting of the following conversation except to say that we were given some advice on how to proceed with our mission, and what the options were for every approach to the problem so to speak. I could tell that Jazira was not taking what the Vizir said at face value, but I could not get a read on the man myself…. he had been at this for far to long for the likes of me to tell if what he was saying was truth, deception, or something in between. All in all, the meet went smoothly but the information did more to muddle the waters than clear them in my opinion.

Caravan_Tent__2_.jpgWhen we got back to the tents Gwaedhon dropped a hornet’s nest on me. He informed us that the reason we had been sent on this expedition was because of some information he had received from a Headmaster Kanis. He had taken the information to Phildren who was the one that had officially sent us down here. To say the least, I was a bit taken aback. I really thought that Gwaeden would tell me about things of this nature. For him to leave me out of the loop was a bit disheartening but when I learned that Kanis was a Lich I began to understand why he had kept quiet… I really was shocked to hear that not only had Gwaedhon met with this thing but that he had been learning from him as well. Somewhere in that discussion I began to drink without even realizing it, and soon I was too drunk to care. I remember Taura and someone else getting me to my bed. I also remember thinking, as Taura carried me, that in her own way Taura is quite an impressive woman herself… I think I will keep that to myself.

April 15, 1407

Jazira decided to call another meeting to discuss whether we would continue the mission as planned or choose another path. I was in favor of continuing even though that was exactly the Vizier had recommended but it became quickly clear that Aretimis would have nothing to do with this plan any longer. He and his family had evidently suffered at the hands of the Vizier before and he wanted nothing to do with it. To make that clear he informed us that his wife, who has been traveling with us, would no longer be involved. Jazira herself seemed to want to take a different path.

I decided to press the point and suggested we should at the very least try to contact the New Umbrian diplomat before we made any changes to our plans. Jazira agreed and I was given permission to go to their estate.

When I arrived the gate, itself was unlocked and no one came when I rang the bell, so I decided to go to the door. I knocked a couple of times and even called out to see if anyone would answer but it was to no avail, nobody answered. Still, something just didn’t seem right, and I decided to detect magic to see if any was still active and I did see that there was still something active. I decided to leave a note and that was it. I left the house and returned to our tents.

That evening as I was sleeping someone tried to Dominate me through the Dream Realm. Gladly the attempt was unsuccessful, but I decided to wake both Artemis and Gwaedhon to let them know what had happened. Together they set up a trap in case the individual decided to try again.

April 16, 1407

Gladly I awoke this morning, and nothing had happened so Gwaedhon and Artemis headed off to their own beds. I went in search of a bath and breakfast. Sometime after I had entered the bath the lights went out.

I awoke on a carpeted floor, naked and wet I might add, with Taura standing behind me and a Dark Elf standing in front of me and my head feeling like It would split open and empty its contents on the floor. The Dark Elf was dressed in robes and carried a Staff. As I looked up at the individual I realized two things. First this was a female Dark Elf and second, she was very pale and thin looking. She stepped forward as I was looking at her and said lie still, this should help but it will likely be unpleasant. At which point she pointed the staff at me and unleashed what appeared to be lightning. When I regained my senses, I did feel better but that was not fun. The woman asked Taura to go into the next room to get me some clothes and with a nod she did so, returning a moment later with a lady’s silk night robe… wonderful. I took the garment and put it on, but it only barely covered me. I decided to sit for the discussion that was to come.

She asked my name and the purpose for my coming to the estate the day before. I explained who I was and that I merely wished to try to meet with the ambassador should they still be here. It took a bit of doing but I was able to convince her that I was telling the truth. In turn I asked who she was and after a bit of discussion I was able to get her to tell me that she was Sarai Ammishaddai, the former Consort of Arch-Duke Dante l’Umbria and that she had been here for a time recuperating from wounds she had sustained when Dante had been assassinated and that I had created a bit of a situation for her. Shortly after that she looked away and when she looked back she instructed Taura to take the rug and go back downstairs. We apparently had been followed and she wanted Taura to distract them while she spoke to me.

What I came to learn was that I had placed the lady in jeopardy and that now she would have to leave. I suggested that maybe we could help and tried to convince her of that. That is when she finally allowed Jazira to come into the room. I sat quietly as Jazira convinced her that we could indeed help her out and make plans for us to get her on board one of our ships where she might be safe.

It was a long walk back to the tents in nothing but a silk bathrobe and Taura had the good graces to at least look a little shamefaced about the whole thing.

Aftermath…

We wound up changing our plans, and quickly packed up our gear and got everyone to the boats including Lady Ammishaddai. I contacted Lady Mune and we established a plan to meet with her so that she could join us. Now we are back at sea on our way to Ionia and it looks like it could be a long trip.

Teaser Lead-In Story

This story sets the stage for the “Clandestine Meeting” scene between Jazira’s team and Princess Dejah al’Rashid and High Vizier Akmed al’Jafar.

Dejah was waiting. She was in one of the ground level rooms that would allow her to access the secret door to the alleyway. She hated waiting. She had been pacing earlier but had stopped herself. Akmed was watching her again. He always watched. She hated that too. Alley.pngRather than think about being in the same room with him she started to pace again. She knew she was giving to much away to Akmed but he always knew. Why should she care. She was the Crown Princess of the Sultanate. Whomever she married would become the next Sultan, and it wasn’t going to be him. “Stop staring at me Akmed, your annoying me.” All he said in that orators dream of a voice was, “Of course your Highness.” The High Vizier of the Sultanate, her father’s chief adviser, as well as the most powerful living arcane practitioner on Parth remained seated in front of his chess board taking supreme care with how each piece was arranged as if it really mattered. It was just a prop. Just another way for him to demonstrate how far beyond them he was. Dejah thought to herself for the hundredth time, ‘I hate Astromancers. For once I wish there was something he didn’t know in advance.’

“Your Highness, they will arrive on time. You needn’t worry so. Though with as much attention as they have drawn one wonders if there is anyone left who doesn’t know their here?” And with a chuckle, Akmed carefully repositioned one of the white knights on the board to be more centrally located. Ignoring the dig, Dejah went on, “Will Jazi come alone?” With the question asked, Akmed stopped pondering the chess board and looked directly at Dejah, “Very unlikely your Highness, she doesn’t know whom she is meeting.” Akmed pondered for a moment and continued, “She will likely bring the Priest, one of the arcane casters, likely the good commodore, and perhaps the Bugbear if she is feeling threatened. Regardless, she will not come alone.”

Chessboard_and_Wine.jpegAnd with that Dejah started to pace again. After a couple of minutes had passed Akmed volunteered, “Your Highness, you know this is in vain, they will not take my advice. My very presence will likely make them forgo this portion of their mission and divert to a more direct attempt to get to Lothira.” “Is it their fault that they don’t trust you?” Dejah snapped, “If you didn’t use people as disposable tools maybe they would be more open to your advice.” “It would not matter how I treated them, they fear those who have true power and understand its proper application,” he said with a faintest hint of a smile on his face. With some real heat starting to show in her voice, “Akmed, you will help them, I order it!” “Of course your Highness, only do not expect them to trust it. They will believe the information but also believe I am holding something back as well.” Dejah thought, ’That’s because you always hold something back.’

“They are here your Highness.” Then Akmed turn to the door way and said, “Achim, Abdul, go with her and protect.” And with that the outlines of the two spectral guardians briefly appeared only to quickly fade back into non-existence as they move to follow Princess Dejah.

Missives of Sonya Ironhand 10
Game 91 -- From the Writings of Baron Sonya Ironhand

This last week I was asked to track down a possible Mountain Giant sighting that would have been along the route that the army will be taking through the mountains. Normally I would have asked Marathon to come with me as he is the best tracker I know but he was already on a different assignment, in fact he was the one that reported seeing the giant in the first place. So, I checked to see who else was available but to my surprise just about everyone was already doing something else. That being the case I decided to check in on Alariste Shieldarm. Since he is on assignment as an adviser to the army he really doesn’t have a lot to do so I found him at his tent and told him what was going on and asked if he would be willing to join me for this expedition. After considering his ale for a few moments like he would be leaving an old friend behind he agreed to come along.

The area that the giant was reported to be in was a couple of days flight from the camp and we set out on our griffins. We wound up staying the night in a small fishing village along the way. The townsfolk were friendly enough, but I have to say I miss being able to just walk into a place and feel like a regular person….well as regular as it ever got for me at least. Now whenever someone hears my name they start treating me as someone that I’m still not comfortable with. Maybe I should try to adopt a fake name….what do they call that…a nom de guere? gear? guerre? Whatever.

The next day we arrived in the area early in the afternoon. I was trying to determine where we needed to start look for tracks based on the description we had been given but was having trouble finding the right markers. Alariste was having no such difficulties and even spotted what looked like tracks.

After a few moments discussion we set down and I began looking for tracks…. how in the hell something the size of a Mountain Giant can sneak around like this I’ll never understand but it took all my skill to locate any tracks at all and then only because they looked very fresh. I told Alariste that I just wanted to see if we could talk to the giant…maybe bully him into telling us something. I think he mostly agreed but we decided it would be best if he remounted just in case.

I moved to where I could see down into a series of little ravines and as I looked out I expected to see something…some sign of the Giant but there was nothing but rock and scrub. But I knew he had to be there…. the signs were too fresh, so I decided to try to flush him out. I pointed in what I thought might be the correct direction, turned my head and called out to Alariste “There he is Alariste”. My plan worked better than I expected too. As I looked back over the ledge I saw the Giant rise and huck a boulder the size of my griffin at me!

Now, I’ve been hit with a boulder like that before and I quickly decided that I didn’t want to do it again and I’m not to proud to say that I dove for cover. I only just got clear too. By that time Alariste was already in the air and it was clear we were going to have to fight. As I ran back to Tuton Alariste got in position for a charge. I’m not sure but I think the giant managed to throw another boulder at Alariste, I was too busy running to really see. As I reached Tuton I heard Alariste’s griffin give a great cry as they charged, heard the impact of the lance and the roar of the giant as the lance hit home and drove him to his knees. By the time I got aloft and was getting into position Alariste was already taking his second pass. By Phos that man is a devil with the lance. The second charge looked as devastating as the first and the giant went down.

Alariste and I regrouped to assess the situation and it was clear that the giant was bleeding out, so we landed as near as we could, and I went up to his head. I could hear as I approached the giant talking to someone, as I got closer I realized he was talking to his mother, calling softly to her. This only made what I had to next all the more difficult…you see we needed information about why the giant was here…. So, I did something I do fairly well, I lied to the giant as he lay there dying, made him believe I was his mother speaking to him. His name was Bazzlefisk, a name I later recalled as belonging to one of the best Mountain Giant Rangers around. He told me that he had been sent here to watch for our armies and to report to the giant armies. But that was about all I was going to get…he was losing consciousness too quickly. Seeing the pain, he was in I decided to end his suffering.

I think that Alariste and I both knew we couldn’t leave him lying there on the side of the mountain…. we didn’t really say much but we both began to get to work. In the end we did go through his things. We only kept the money in his bag and a plain ring and chain. The money we kept more because of the type of coin and mint dates….it was old and worn elven coin. I’m not sure why I kept the ring and chain…. still not sure really. Its not like I could use it. We wound up pushing his body down into a small ravine and causing a rock slide to cover him up. We made sure his weapons were with him as he was buried, and I said some words over him. It wasn’t much but it was all we could really do.

Later that night as we camped by the lake Alariste and I talked a little about what had happened. We both seemed to feel…. well not upset exactly…. maybe more uneasy about what had happened. Neither one of us felt good about killing Basilfisk but we also didn’t feel like we really had any other choice either. I have never flinched over killing someone or something before. It honestly never even registered, but this seemed unnecessary…. wrong somehow. I’m not sure what has changed for me, but something has and its making my brain itch. Maybe it’s that I feel like I failed when all I wanted to do was get some information and find a way to make the giant move on and leave his army behind. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that at the end all he wanted was to hear his mother’s voice… something I can’t even imagine wanting.

I won’t speak for Alariste other than to say that I think he felt something like what I was feeling. I will say that we were both very dour as we flew back to the camp.

Rhine_Lake__2_.jpgAs Alariste, Knight Marshal of the Alysian Alliance and Sonya, Baron of the Iron Hills were flying into the general area where their friend Marrathon had reported the tracks, both of them delayed while taking in the beauty of the Callovian Mountains just south of them. Both of their griffons had taken quite well to travelling together which was a little startling to the two veterans of griffon handling. With the griffons being male and female, they expected them to act out a bit but they had taken to one another quite well. Being only 50 miles short of the County of Glimmervale, Alariste and Sonya knew they were getting close to where then needed to start their search. By taking the lake approach they were able to get this wonderful view of the Callovian Mountains most northern peaks (pictured above and to the left). As Alariste started to gain some altitude to get a better view of the area so he could make a good guess as to were to begin their search, Sonya was moving in lower to scout for possible camp sites as both men believed they would be out in the area for at least a few days. It was a little past noon when they arrived in the area and they where a little head of schedule so they took their time taking in the view. After all, how hard could it be to find Mountain Giant tracks. Little did they know at the time that before the day was over they would have fought and killed Basilfisk, the famous Mountain Giant Ranger Lord of Pellis, an exceptional ranger who was extraordinarily gifted in the art of concealment.

Theater At Sea

After two months at sea and a week since the last sighting of land, the three ships stop an hour before sunset. The crew raised the sails and begins setting up for something…But for what the Azure Guard and accompaniment could did not know. The crew if asked would say Navel Secrets. With the setting sun, the crew all seated and singing all facing out the starboard side a fog rolls in and surrounds the ships.

After the fog arrives and settles a voice starts speaking across the water.
“There were three Brothers, Travelling along a lonely, winding road and at twilight they reached a deep treacherous river where anyone who attempted to swim or wade would drown. Learned in the magical arts, the brothers conjured a bridge with their wands and proceed to cross.

Halfway over the bridge, a hooded figure stood before them. The figure was the enraged spirit of Death, Cheated of his due. Death cunningly pretended to congratulate them and proceeds to award them with gifts of their own choosing.

The Eldest brother, a combative man, asked for a wand more powerful than any in existence. Death granted his wish by fashioning the Elder Wand from a branch if a nearby elder tree standing on the banks of the river. The Second brother, an arrogant man, chose to further humiliate death, and asked for the power to recall the deceased from the grave. Death granted his wish by crafting the Resurrection stone from a stone picked from the riverbank. The third and youngest brother, who was the most humble and wise, did not trust Death and asked for something to enable him to go forth without Death being able to follow. A reluctant Death, most unwillingly, handed over his own invisibility cloak.

The three brothers took their prizes and soon went on their separate ways.

The eldest brother traveled to a village where a wizard whom he had quarreled lived. He sought out a duel and fought the wizard using the wand, instantly killing him.

Leaving his enemy dead upon the street, the eldest brother walked to an inn not far from the dueling site and spent the night there. Taken by his lust of the elder wand’s power, the eldest brother boasted of his wand gifted by death and his own invincibility.

That very night, Death possessed a murderous wizard. The unknown murderous wizard crept to the inn as the eldest brother slept, drunk from wine. The wizard slit the oldest brother’s throat for good measure and stole the wand. That was when Death took the first brother.

The second brother returned to his home where he lived alone. Turning the stone thrice in his hand the figure of the girl he had once hoped to marry, before her untimely death, appeared at once before him, much to his delight. Yet she was sad and cold, separated from him as by a veil. Though she had returned to the mortal world, she did not truly belong there and suffered. Finally, the second brother, driven mad with hopeless longing, committed suicide by hanging from his house’ balcony so as truly to join her. That was when death took the second brother for his own.

Death searched for the youngest brother as years past but never succeeded. It was only when the third brother reached a great age, he took off the Cloak of Invisibility and gave it to his son. Greeting Death as an old friend, they departed this life as equals.

Gwaedhon was standing on the balcony of his plush accommodations in the Harbor Palace Hotel. He had one of the premium suites whose balcony overlooked the harbor and the bay beyond. Bishop_Kamon.jpgIt was just after lunch when he finally sighted what he had been hoping for and in truth dreading for the past week. His vacation was truly over. An Elven Schooner was making good time into the bay. It was the first time he had every seen one of the famous Elven ships but he knew it none-the-less. The sleek lines and unmistakable rigging are legendary. She was also flying Alysian Merchantmen colors, the flag was large and proudly flying in the strong winds of the bay. Even at this distance Gwaedhon could clearly see the large flags large black triangular corners with the rest an azure diamond and in the center a golden “fleur de lis.” That had to be Commodore Stronghammer’s flag ship, the Bishop Aden. Without looking away and in a low voice, Gwaedhon announced to no one in particular, “Vacation’s over, time to get back to work.”

Rogues will be rogues

One evening Zedi approached me with a special mission. “Phildrin, I need you and Turk to retrieve some documents for me tonight. They should be in a satchel in a Crimson Guard lieutenant’s apartment. Here’s the address.”

Turk and I met and hashed out a rough plan. The lieutentant’s apartment was directly across from the Bastille so we decided to approach from the back near the river. We acquired a small boat, rowed it across the river and docked it half a block away from the building. After confirming which window was our target we waited in the shadows until we detected the diversion that Zedi had promised us. We later determined that he’d set a wagon on fire on the other side of the building.

We quickly and deftly scaled the wall, opened the window, and entered the apartment. Our lieutenant was in the next room looking out the front door at the diversion. I spied the satchel and a number of documents immediately and began acquiring them. Turk in the meantime set to making our mission appear to be a random breaking and entering event by grabbing everything that wasn’t nailed down. After finishing with the documents I assisted Turk and began searching for the types of thing that would typically be taken during a theft (at least what I think would be taken, having never done anything like this before.)

In retrospect I felt a little badly about taking the vast majority this young soldier’s wealth, but I consoled myself by considering that our actions furthered the goals of the greater good, etc., etc.

After a short time we decided we’d done enough and swiftly and silently left the room and began strolling down the street back to our boat. Amusingly, our victim noticed the open window (in retrospect I probably should have taken time to close that, but live and learn) and yelled after us, asking if we’d seen anybody suspicious. We feigned surprised and assured him that we saw nothing out of the ordinary and promised to let him know if we came across any bad guys. He seemed satisfied with our answer and ducked his head back in his apartment.

We met with Zedi not long after and he looked through the documents. He found what he was interested in, which was the schedule for a courier between the Bastille and the palace. Our next task was to acquire the satchel from the courier, who was likely a mid-level cleric with several bodyguards.

I’ll touch briefly on that operation but it was really so trivial that it barely need mentioning. Essentially Turk cast a spell which dazed the cleric and one or two of the four bodyguards. I ran forward, cut the strap on the satchel, grabbed it before it hit the ground and dashed off before any of them knew what hit them. Turk and I both trotted off without a scratch and the courier was empty handed and bewildered.

I do hope that our next mission for the cause is more challenging. Perhaps we will break into the Bastille or steal the crown jewels next time.
